SES Ulverstone
SES Ulverstone
The Central Coast SES Unit is a dedicated team of 25 volunteers who live and work right here in our community. We’re a diverse mix of men and women aged from 18 to 60, bringing different backgrounds, skills and life experiences to every job we attend. Within our crew are members who are brand new to the SES and others who have clocked up more than 17 years of dedicated service. This blend of fresh enthusiasm and seasoned experience is one of our greatest strengths. Like many volunteer emergency services, most of our members also juggle full-time work and family commitments, yet still make the time to train and respond when the pager goes off. Our unit responds to a wide range of incidents across the Central Coast. That includes motor vehicle accidents—sometimes involving complex rescues and extricating people out of vehicles—along with storm damage, flooding, and search and rescue tasks. No two call-outs are the same, and every response requires teamwork, calm decision-making and a strong focus on safety. We’re proud to support other emergency services when they need extra hands and specialist capability. We assist Tasmania Police and Ambulance Tasmania in a range of ways, and we’ve also worked alongside the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) during major bushfires. You’ll often see our volunteers out on the roads at an accident scene or managing traffic control to keep motorists and responders safe. If you see our red and blue flashing lights, please remember to slow down to 40 km/h as you pass. To be ready for whatever comes next, we train every week on a Wednesday with additional weekend training throughout the year. Maintaining skills is critical in our line of work, and training is also where we build confidence, trust and camaraderie—so that when we respond together under pressure, we operate as one crew. All of this is done without being paid. We volunteer because we care about our community, and we want to support people when they’re having one of their worst days. Our members are passionate about where they live, and the people around them, and that commitment is something we never take for granted. I am proud of every single member of our unit and thank them for their enduring commitment to volunteering and being part of our Central Coast SES family. If you are keen to join us, please visit the SES website and register your interest—we’re always looking for new members.

Ecofest Volunteers
Ecofest Volunteers
Many hands make a lighter planet. At this year’s Ecofest, that spirit came alive in force. A vibrant brigade of volunteers turned out in droves, from community groups rallying their crews to individuals stepping up with enthusiasm and grit, to the Camp Clayton team doing what they do best. Clad in a sea of hi-vis fluro, this unstoppable army transformed the festival grounds of Camp Clayton, setting up, keeping things running seamlessly, and packing down after two action-packed days. At the heart of it all was the ever-busy Waste Not Hub, where volunteers became champions of change. With energy and pride, they guided festival goers through plate returns and waste sorting—bringing Ecofest’s zero-waste vision to life for the second year running. Behind the scenes, a dedicated committee of eight passionate changemakers poured in countless volunteer hours to craft an inspiring program. From thought-provoking presenters to lively performers, hands-on workshops, and engaging exhibitors, every detail was carefully curated to spark ideas and action. Ecofest continues to shine as a powerful catalyst for change, welcoming community groups and their volunteers to share their missions, connect with others, and inspire a more sustainable future

Salvation Army Ulverstone
Salvation Army Ulverstone
The Salvation Army in Ulverstone has a wonderful team of volunteers at Salvo Connect, which supports people facing hardship and injustice. The support hub, located at 23 Victoria St, Ulverstone, features a shower and laundry for rough sleepers; food and financial assistance; No Interest Loan Scheme support; monthly Centrelink visits (face-to-face); computers for checking emails / printing resumes; warm winter clothing / tents / sleeping bags; and a place to sit and chat. All assistance is based on perceived need, with referrals to onsite caseworkers and deeper supports to work on the underlying issues causing disadvantage. On an average week, we would assist around 40 local people coming into the centre - some of whom have families to support, or need intensive supports. We would provide 10-20 showers for rough sleepers, and constant washing loads! Funding for the Hub comes from our local Thrift Shop (also run by a large volunteer team), the Red Shield Appeal, and local generous sponsors. Our volunteers make all this possible. The Salvo Connect team includes the amazing Tina, Stan, Carol and Karen, with LC as the coordinator and Robyn as caseworker. Through offering their time at the Support Hub, they are making a real difference in the local community - and we are so grateful for them!

TFS Ulverstone
TFS Ulverstone
For more than 115 years, the Ulverstone Fire Brigade has proudly supported and protected the local community. Today, it remains one of Tasmania’s busiest fully volunteer brigades, responding to more than 200 call outs each year. The brigade is made up entirely of dedicated volunteers who continually train and upskill to maintain the highest standards. Members train fortnightly and regularly complete additional courses in bushfire response, urban firefighting, pump operations, hazmat response, first aid, and advanced resuscitation. Beyond emergency response, the brigade plays an important role in community life, supporting events including the Christmas Parade, Christmas Carols, Anzac Day services, school visits, and nursing home visits. Volunteers describe the brigade as “one big second family” where everyone looks out for each other, and no one is ever left behind. One member recently celebrated an incredible 45 years of service! Ulverstone Fire Brigade continues to encourage new volunteers to get involved, learn valuable skills and make a real difference in the community. Brigade members say there is nothing more meaningful than helping someone on one of the worst days of their life, whether attending a major emergency or simply rescuing a cat from a tree. Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) sessions
Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) sessions
In the past year, the North West Coast has faced power outages, strong winds, bushfires and more. Emergencies can happen anytime – and being prepared makes all the difference. If you live with disability, you might have a few extra things to consider or need support in different ways. These sessions are designed to help – online or in person – and SES will work alongside you to make a plan that suits your life. SES will work with you to follow the four steps of the Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) model:
- Start with you – What are your everyday strengths and support needs? You’re the expert in your own life.
- Check your readiness – Learn how prepared you are and what types of emergencies could happen in your area.
- Make a plan – Think about your support needs and how to manage them in an emergency.
- Share your plan – Talk it through with your support network and find ways to fill any gaps.
Everyone’s plan will be different – and that’s exactly the point. SES are here to help you feel more confident and supported, whatever comes your way. There are regular online Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness sessions with SES – Register from www.ses.tas.gov.au/pcep .
